expresso

In June of 2005 I took this picture while the wife and I were visiting a local cafe, This is the standard fare in any European cafe—a small cup of expresso. I received an email today from my esteemed colleague in Prague reporting that America's beloved Starbucks coffee house has come to the Czech Republic. Read here about the first Starbucks in Prague.

Will Czech's pay the extra bit for premium coffee? Or will they write it off as overpriced coffee and stick to their standard fare (see picture above)? If Starbucks was in Kaunas I would certainly go. Maybe more out of familiarity than premium coffee, though.

Napolean's retreat arrives in Kaunas—mid December, 1812. Earlier in June 24, 1812, Napolean had crossed the river in Kaunas with his Grand Armée. The Grand Armée totaled over 600,000 soldiers and was the largest army ever assembled in Europe up to that date. Yet, the Grand Armée only retreated from Kaunas in December 1812 with 40,000 men. See here for more history.

Today the Kaunas war history club—Batalionas—staged a reenactment of the retreat in Rumškiškes with their colleagues from Latvia, Poland and other Lithuanian cities. Me and the family enjoyed this excursion today and soon I will have a slideshow prepared.

Lithuania is so flat that you have to lay on your stomach to see the hills. Yet. there are a few steep hills in Kaunas that demand help from the municipality on behalf of the locals. 75 years ago Kaunas built this funicular. If you are not up to taking the steps you can part with some coins and take an easy ride up. Naturally I mostly see senior citizens and mothers with children on the funicular.

I walked half a kilometer away from the office building to take this picture of the Žaliakalnio funikulierius.

What better way to give a child some busy work than to give the little one some bread dough to work, work and work. Oh how her little hands were eager and content with this humble task.
